Art school drop out, former tech support and educator, amateur photographer….
Jo entered cosmetology school on a whim almost a decade ago. Within a few weeks, they were hooked. The geometry of haircutting tugged at their heart strings as if they had just discovered what they were meant to do.
Jo studied at Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica embracing all of the precision shapes they had to offer. This classical training was the foundation they firmly stood on while they embraced curly hair cutting for the first time. After approaching their mentor, Lauren Kay (who took them under their wing for an intensive study of curly hair for a year), their world expanded with a whole new cutting philosophy “intuitive cutting”. Intrigued by this new method, they adapted to a new tool, the straight razor. This single blade became the magic wand that could carve into the hair and determine the positive and negative space. It opened their mind to new possibilities for silhouettes. These methods together with classical training has allowed them to develop a special set of skills utilizing both scissors and a straight razor.
Jo is a nonbinary stylist and uses they/them pronouns
They will always start every single client interaction by asking you for your pronouns while introducing you to theirs with some examples of how to use them. They understand that sometimes mistakes happen, in the case that you happen to use the wrong pronouns, you’ll be corrected by Jo in a polite way, try and refrain from saying sorry, but instead just say ‘thank you’ and continue the conversation as it was.
